Fiona's March Picks

Fiona's March Picks

It’s hard to believe March has come and gone but it means that spring is around the corner. For those of you in Toronto or surrounding areas, we can just all collectively agree to ignore the snowstorms we had in March and look forward to brighter sunny days ahead.

I’m excited to start this new series on my favorite monthly picks. From clothes to skincare, I’m trying and buying new things each month, and rounding up my favorites to share with you.

March is the perfect month for me to start this series as I went back into the office for the first time in two years and naturally, I used that as an excuse to purchase an entire new outfit. Granted, it was just for one afternoon, but first impressions count.

Let’s start with the fit.

1) Zara Textured Double Breasted Blazer

For those of you that know me IRL, you’ll know that my outfits generally consist of neutrals with lots of black, but with the pandemic in my rearview mirror and spring on the horizon, I decided to choose boldly and go with this bright green blazer. As a woman of color, I’m extra aware of how certain colors can look against my skin tone but this was a win and I’d give this blazer five stars all around.

It’s hard for me to choose what I like more about this blazer - the color or the fit. I’m going to go with both! I love that this blazer sits a little longer and hits the thigh. I paired it with a tucked-in white tee and a pair of black skinny jeans, to make my legs look longer than they actually are.

My only caution with this blazer or blazers that are similar in the material is the nature of the woven fabric. You need to be extra careful around your beloved pets, jewelry, or sharp corners/objects to make sure the threads don’t snag.

2) Saint Laurent Andy Sneakers

White sneakers are the ultimate staple in every closet and mine is no different. I definitely over-index on sneaker-wearing than heel-wearing, but for good reason. I love that white sneakers are versatile enough that I can dress them up for work or dress it down to run errands. I needed a new pair of white sneakers as my last pair were the Vans Classic Tumble Old Skool and they started to look more brown than white. I did a lot of research and window shopping before deciding on the Saint Laurent Andy Sneakers.

I ultimately chose the Saint Laurent Andy Sneaker because it fit the exact description of what I was looking for. The latest trend in sneakers is skewing more to the chunky-dad-running-shoe look but I needed a design that was more put together and something I could wear to the office. At first, I tried the Balenciaga Triple S Trainers, then the Dior Walk'N'Dior sneaker, and then the Saint Laurent  Court Classic Embroidered Sneaker. The Balenciaga and Dior sneakers both didn’t fit the “look” I was going for. I liked the Saint Laurent Court Classic Embroidered Sneaker but found that the lip dug into the front of my foot since it was a jagged finish. I tried the Andy Sneaker from Saint Laurent too and loved how comfortable it was. I was immediately sold and couldn’t wait to style it in my own way.

Let me address the elephant on the page - why am I buying a designer white sneaker when there are lots of other affordable shoes that look similar? To me, the answer is simple but not applicable to everyone. I want to invest in a few quality pieces that are going to last me a long time. My strategy when shopping is to splurge on timeless pieces and choose affordability when shopping on-trend. You might have a different strategy and could focus on quantity of clothes or strictly the quality of clothes but my point is, at the end of the day, you need to do what works for you and spend your money how you choose.

Moving on to the “essentials”

3) Fenty Beauty Mascara

Now that we covered the fit, I want to share my favorite essentials that I am loving this month. Let’s start with the Fenty Beauty Mascara - I am obsessed!

I have super sensitive eyelids and I’ve tried lots of mascaras, clean and not, but they irritate my eyes and cause me to wipe it off before I even leave the house. I heard about the Fenty Beauty Mascara from Nina Ubhi, a make-up artist from Dubai and my new favorite YouTuber to binge-watch. I ran to my nearest Sephora and decided to try the Fenty Beauty Mascara. Let me tell you… this lived up to the hype. My favorite thing about this mascara and what I think trumps all the others, is the wand itself. There are two components of the brush: the larger brush for your upper lashes and a smaller brush for your lower lashes. My lower lashes have never looked so good and that’s why this will be a staple in my makeup bag moving forward.

4) Chanel Nº5 Perfume

March is my birthday month so when my fiancé asked me what I wanted, I asked for new perfume. I’ve been loving the Chloé Nomade Perfume but I wanted something that was more feminine. Before heading to the Chanel boutique, I knew I’d love the Chanel Nº5 but I wanted something different, more unique. Scent after scent, I just kept going back to Chanel Nº5 so I decided to go with the fan-favourite. I love the Chanel Nº5 (as do most people) for its Ylang-Ylang, Jasmine, and Musk notes. I love that it’s not too sweet or floral but more of a musky floral scent. Yep, that’s how I’m going to describe Chanel Nº5- a musky floral.

Perfume is such a personal choice so it’s not to say that just because I like this scent you will too but I highly recommend visiting a Chanel boutique to find your own favourite scent. I really enjoyed the experience and it was all thanks to my consultant. She was knowledgeable in the scent profiles but also so patient with me as I tried all the different scents.

5) Briogeo Scalp Revival Shampoo

Since spring is just around the corner and spring cleaning is a common topic around this time of year, I thought about carrying the same principle to my hair care routine. As a curly-haired woman, I love my Briogeo shampoo, conditioner, and styling products but I didn’t try their exfoliating shampoo until this month. With hair products, I’m never sure how my hair is going to react so I was hesitant to add something new to my wash day routine. I noticed my clean Briogeo shampoo wasn’t doing a great at clarifying on its own and I needed something with more toughness to use weekly. Depending on your scalp and hair texture, you could definitely use this more or less than once week but for my hair, once a week works great as I end up alternating between this and the Briogeo Curl Charisma Shampoo every wash day. I’m very happy with this find and I can see myself committing to this in my wash day routine but definitely not too often or it could dry out my hair.

And that’s a wrap on my March favourites! Have you tried any of these? Let me know in the comments or you can find me on Instagram @BlushGrove.
